My weekend started with a trip to Street Feast in Dalston, London which I have been to a few times now but always enjoy heading back to. This popup food market is open every Friday and Saturday after 5pm and features plenty of food choices to get your mouth watering and a fair few bars to help wash the food down too. There is a lot of choice ranging from Vietnamese to Mexican but a lot of the produce isn’t gluten free so be sure to ask about allergies before trying anything. This time I tracked down a plate of tortilla chips with a mountain of guacamole followed by glass upon glass of bubbly prosecco. Now I must admit that I was feeling slightly sorry for myself the next day so whipped up this dessert for a hangover sugar high.

With plenty of football on our screens already and Wimbledon kicking off today I’m sure that the TV will now be split between the football pitch and tennis court, especially if Jon has any say. Any mention of Wimbledon makes me miss our old flat a little as the atmosphere around this time of year was always incredible. If you are at a loss for something to do over the next few weeks and haven’t been able to get tickets to any matches, just pop to Wimbledon Village for a wander round to soak up the excitement before finding a deck chair and screen to watch the tennis.

If you prefer however to hide from the temperamental weather and to watch the tennis from the comfort of your own home with friends round for drinks and dinner, you can definitely do no wrong in serving up this summer fruit pavlova. This dessert creates an impressive centrepiece at your dinner table so you can all grab a slice and tuck in.

The crunchy sweet meringue is the perfect base to sit your whipped double cream, strawberries and blackberries on top. However what works even better is the fluffy centre which when paired with the sugary sweetness of the cream really melts in the mouth. I made a strawberry coulis to drizzle across the dessert which added another flash of colour. I served my pavlova up with this already poured however you could bring a jug of coulis to the table and allow your guests to pour their own.

Summery berry pavlova recipe
  • 4 eggs
  • 250g caster sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cornflour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 500g strawberries
  • 3 tablespoons icing sugar
  • 300ml double cream
  • 150g blackberries
  1. Preheat the oven to 130C/266F and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl of a stand mixer add the egg whites and discard the egg yolks. Use the whisk attachment to whisk the egg whites into stiff peaks on a medium setting, this should take about 5 minutes.
  3. While the stand mixer is still on, add a tablespoon of sugar at a time and allow to whisk in between each addition. The egg whites will turn glossy.
  4. After all of the sugar has been added, add in the cornflour and vanilla extract and whisk until combined.
  5. Spoon the mixture into the middle of the baking tray and try to keep the meringue in a circle shape. Use the spoon to create a shallow crater in the centre of the meringue as this is where you will put your cream and fruit.
  6. Put in the oven for an hour and then leave to cool on the baking tray.
  7. Hull the strawberries and chop into quarters.
  8. Put 100g of strawberries and 2 tablespoons of icing sugar into a food processor and whiz together.
  9. Once blended, pass the mixture through a sieve and keep the coulis to drizzle on top of your pavlova later on.
  10. Add the double cream and remaining icing sugar into a large bowl and whisk, preferably in a stand mixer, until the cream has thickened.
  11. Spread the cream on the cooled meringue and then top with the chopped strawberries and blackberries before drizzling with coulis and serving.
